Pilgrimage is a series of 12 artworks, which were created in 2016, part of ‘Intersection’ body of works, a collaboration between visual artist Nicola Anthony & poet Marc Nair. By exploring and pairing neighborhoods in their home cities, the artists strive to express the secret links which bind any personal and national histories.
Pilgrimage series is inspired by the history of Kampong Glam in Singapore. Standing in Haji Lane today, it’s impossible to remember when ships docked by Jalan Sultan. However, up to the mid-1970s, Kampong Glam was the pilgrim hub of Southeast Asia. Devotees would buy their supplies from shops and board a pilgrim ship to Mecca from Beach Road. Look at Pilgrimage, then close your eyes and experience ghosts and vibrations from the past manifesting in the now.
