NCS

Born in 1973, Nyein Chan Su, mostly known as NCS, had a traditional training in painting at the State School of Fine Arts in Yangon. NCS prematurely passed away in 2020.

Despite the closing of his country to foreign influence for many years, NCS adapted his artistic practice to the most cutting edge artistic language. Well established both in Myanmar and internationally, NCS was nominated for the prestigious APB Signature Art Prize 2011 organized by the Singapore Art Museum. He co-founded an artist -run space, Studio Square.

At a time when Myanmar negotiated the opening of the country and the reforming of its political governance, the work of NCS was like a silent scream. Subtle but extremely powerful his paintings expressed the protest and the expectations of a people who have learnt to speak out without words.

NCS’ Memories For the Future Series has been exhibited at the Alliance Francaise of Singapore in collaboration with Intersections in April 2013. You can learn more about Memories For The Future by viewing the exhibition’s e-Booklet.

In 2015, NCS’ was featured at Art Stage Singapore, Art Paris Art Fair and in “The Lady, the Peacock and the Nation” a group show at Intersections Gallery in 2015.

Nyein Chan Su’s artworks are in the permanent collections of the Singapore Art Museum, the Fukuoka Art Museum , the National Gallery Singapore as well as in private collections in Europe and Asia.

Burmese Vignettes, Devotion & Protest strives to show the relevance of NCS’ series created from 2013 to 2015 in the 2018 context.
