Overview
Chuu Wai (b. 1992, Myanmar) is a painter and performance artist who holds a BA degree in IT engineering from the Technological University, Mandalay and a Postgraduate Diploma in Art from the National University of Art and Culture, Mandalay. Her paintings reflect her interest in the female identity and strive to push the boundaries created by social norms. After the February 2021 military coup, Chuu Wai got involved in the peaceful street protests which spread in the streets of Yangon. Her “Write for Rights” project, which aimed at supporting the Civil Disobedience Movement, put her life in danger and she decided to leave her country. She currently lives in exile in France.This experience has significantly influenced her artistic direction. Her work transcends mere documentation, subverting traditional narratives to offer a nuanced portrayal of female identity and resistance. Chuu Wai has participated in many exhibitions in Europe, Asia and America. She was invited to create murals and public art in France, Germany, Switzerland and Thailand. Her work is in the collection of the British Museum.
