Who is Aung Khin?

Aung Khin was born in 1921 and grew up in a small village of Central Myanmar. His father passed away when he was only four. He was sent to a monastic school when he was 6. In 1937, Aung Khin’s brother, having noticed his artistic talent, sent him to Yangon to study art with U Ba Nyan.

At the time, U Ba Nyan was already famous for introducing Western techniques in Burmese painting after hist studies in England and an extensive tour of Europe.

In 1948, U Aung Khin married a Mandalay lady who’s family owned a business in traditional embroidery. From then on, he never had to worry about getting a source of income and only focused on creating art. He participated in many group shows and had three solo shows in Mandalay and two solo shows in Yangon.  He was the Secretary and President of the Mandalay’s artist Association for twelve years.

Aung Khin passed away in 1996.

About This Book

Based on an iconography never shown before, curated from 300 works in all medium, this book traces the artistic and intellectual itinerary of U Aung Khin, considered one of the greatest Burmese modern artists.

It also seeks to show the link with the contemporary art scene in Myanmar today and the influence that this painter had on the younger generation.

This book is the result of years of research, dozens of trips to Myanmar, but most importantly of building strong relationships with Myanmar artists. ​It truly was a collaborative labor of love, with contributors from Myanmar, Cambodia and Singapore.

Marie-Pierre Mol

Marie-Pierre is an independent curator and co-founder of Intersections, a gallery and art consultancy based in Singapore. Intersections’ mission is to bridge cultures through the arts. Marie-Pierre holds a Master of Art in Asian Art Histories from Goldsmiths College, University of London. She specialises in contemporary art from Myanmar and has curated many exhibitions of Burmese artists both in Yangon and in Singapore, as well as exhibitions of French and Singaporean artists in Singapore. Intersections has also been invited to participate in the Singapore platform of Art Paris 2015 to present Burmese contemporary artists. She has participated in every edition of Art Stage Singapore from 2015 to 2018 and in SEA FOCUS in 2019 with artists from Myanmar.

Madeleine de Langalerie

A professional journalist, Madeleine arrived in Phnom Penh in 1992, after the Paris Peace Accords, to report on the elections. She then served for 15 years, until 2005, as manager for TV5 Asia Bureau–Asia region and was based out of Phnom Penh and Bangkok. She chose to stay in Cambodia where she now pursues her passion to garner global interest in the talent of Cambodian artists. She currently works in Phnom Penh as an independent curator and event organiser. For this project, she met Cho Cho Aung, painter and U Aung Khin’s daughter.
